How to Start Printing Cards At Home

January 2, 2023

So you want to get started printing cards at home but you don’t know where to start? You’ve come to the right place! If you don’t know me, I’m Jordyn. For 8 years I ran a greeting card company in which I started printing cards at home with supplies I had on hand. Eventually I upgraded my paper and printer, and then years later started outsourcing… but we all start somewhere, right?

Supplies Needed for Printing Cards At Home

To get started printing cards at home, you’ll need a few supplies on hand.

  1. Printer (this is the one I use, but you can use whatever one you have at home)
  2. Paper
  3. Envelopes
  4. Paper Cutter
  5. Scoring Board
  6. Design

Valentines Cards

If you are making for personal use, I would recommend using what you have on hand. However, if you are planning on selling these cards, you would want to test out a few different paper options to ensure you have a high quality print and a sturdy card.

The Canon Pixma printers are great printers, but they are a little picky with their papers! Once you find a good combination, you get beautiful print jobs.

Cutting Out Your Card

The great thing about printing A2 cards at home is that they are exactly half of a letter sized paper, so you only have to make one cut. A2 cards are 4.25 x 5.5 inches, which means you will be cutting at the 5.5″ mark on the long side of your paper.

Cut at 5.5 Inches

Line the paper up, making sure it is straight at the top. Then cut at the 5.5″ mark.

Printing Your Card

If you have a printer that allows for smaller than Letter sized printing, I would recommend cutting the paper first. So this step and the previous step would be flipped. However if your printer only allows for letter sized printing, you would print two cards on one sheet and then cut the paper down to size.

Score your card

With your scoring tool, press down lightly at the 4.25″ mark. It might help if you highlight that mark to make it easy to find for next time!

Scoring your card

Fold your card

Fold your card by hand, then lightly use the scoring tool to crease the card. Now you’ve successfully printed your cards at home! The only thing left to do is add an envelope and write your note on the inside. 🙂
