Make a Retro Christmas Sign with Cricut

November 19, 2023

Today I’m going to show you how I made this retro Christmas sign with my Cricut! It’s a super easy Cricut project, and a great intro to layering vinyl.

Get the design used in this tutorial for free! Use code RETROXMAS.

Material List:

  • Wood Sign (I faux-stained and painted it)
  • Vinyl
  • Transfer Tape
  • Cricut Tools: scraper, weeding tool

Step 1: Weed Your Vinyl

After cutting your vinyl you’ll need to remove the excess vinyl by pulling at an angle, and going slowly to ensure no pieces move. Depending on the vinyl and size of your project it may be easier to cut the excess vinyl once you’ve pulled it up so you’re not pulling as large of a piece at one time.

Once the excess vinyl is pulled off you can weed the vinyl. For this design there are only two pieces you need to weed – the inside of the R and A. For larger pieces I use the Cricut weeding tool, but for tiny pieces I use a weeding pen.

Step 2: Apply Transfer Tape

Adhere transfer tape to your first layer (for me this was the red letters), and use a scraper tool to adhere. Then at an angle pull off the vinyl backing.

Step 3: Layer the Vinyl

After the first layer is adhered to the transfer tape you will put it on top of the next layer (green letters for me). The two little berries were my anchors I used to know I was lining it up properly.

Then using a scraper tool, adhere the vinyl to the transfer tape.

Again, remove the backing of the vinyl by pulling slowly at an angle.

Repeat this process of layering and removing the backing until you have all pieces of your vinyl added.
Tip: use the backing paper of the transfer tape to lay underneath your vinyl so it doesn’t stick to your table.

Step 4: Adhere to Wood Sign

With all of your vinyl layered on the transfer tape, place it on the wood sign. Use your scraper tool to make sure it is fully adhered, then pull the transfer tape off at an angle.

And here is the final product:
