The Best Supplies for Hand Lettering

December 1, 2022

If you’re new to hand lettering, or you’re just looking for new supply recommendations then look no further! In this post I’m sharing some of my personal favorite supplies for hand lettering.

BRUSH MARKERS FOR HAND LETTERING

Small Tip Markers:

I recommend starting off with small brush markers, as they are easier to work with. Once you’ve mastered thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes, you can move onto the larger brushes.

  1. Tombow Fudenosuke Soft + Hard Tip
  2. Pentel Sign Brush Pen
  3. Faber Castell Brush

Large Tip Markers:

  1. Tombow Dual Brush Markers
  2. Crayola Supertips
  3. Faber Castell Big Brush
  4. Pentel Aquash Water Brush

Below is a video I made on some marker comparisons, so you can see them in real life.

OTHER SUPPLIES FOR HAND LETTERING

Depending on the marker you are using, paper can be crucial to your lettering. Tombow Dual Brush markers (and similar ones) need to be used on a very smooth paper. Regular copy paper can fray those types of markers quickly. I recommend Strathmore Bristol Paper but you can go to your local craft store and feel the papers for ones that are super smooth.

Just getting started with hand lettering and the thought of brush markers stresses you out? You might want to start with faux calligraphy. The Tombow Twin Tone and Zebra Midliner pens are some of my favorites to use, but any pen or pencil will work fine for faux calligraphy.
