The California
I have to start my list off with The California by KA Designs. This was the first font I purchased that was more on the retro side. I was obsessed with those curled tails. Kaitlyn is probably one of the largest font designers I pay attention to, and she has completely leaned into the retro fonts, as she now has tons of them!
The California has both a smooth and textured version, but I recommend using the smooth version if you plan on making SVG designs. If you’re only using the font for printed projects then either font will work well.
Awesome
The Awesome font also makes the top of my list as one of my favorite fonts to create wavy text with. The naturally curvy edges make for great looking wavy text! I use this font all. the. time.
Tangelo
Tangelo Typeface is a modern retro font that has really fun characters. I know you might be drawn to this font for characters like the ‘l’ or ‘y’ but look at that ‘g’! It’s so fun.
The Grande
Similar in vibes to Tangelo, the Grande font is really bold and would make for great branding projects. Grande is great for strong brand marks, those glyphs are just so fun!
Stay Trendy
Lean into the 70s/80s revival trend and get a groovy font like Stay Trendy! It’s bold, wavy, and has some fun glyphs that make your design projects more fun.
Wild Mango
Wild Mango is one of my favorite fonts to use these days. I feel like I’m saying that about most of the fonts here, but I’m obsessed okay? LOL. I looove that w-i ligature, and glyphs like the ‘m’ make your designs elevated just a little bit more! Wild Mango is also a great font for branding projects.
Good Vibes
Good Vibes is a little chunkier than the rest of the fonts listed, so if that’s your vibe then this font is perfect for you!
Retro Groovy
Retro Groovy 100% screams, “I was born in the 80s”. If you’re leaning into making hippie designs then this font will work perfect for those projects. It’s so funky, I love it!
Regards
I hadn’t seen Regards before compiling this list, but I thought it was a good one to add because it stood out from the crowd of other retro fonts. The characters are all super unique and will stand out more than some of the others on this list.
Letter Magic
If you want a font with tons of glyphs, Letter Magic is the font for you. Letter Magic is great for poster designs or branding. Some of those ligatures are really unique and I haven’t seen them done like that before!
Goody Goody
And last but certainly not least is this super funky retro font called Goody Goody. I can just picture so many funky designs made with this font!
